Cairo sits at the edge of the Sahara, and the weather makes that clear from the moment you arrive. This is a desert city in the truest sense. Rainfall is almost nonexistent for most of the year. The sun dominates nearly every day on the calendar. The climate tends toward organized extremity: mild, settled winters. Summers that demand planning rather than improvisation. What saves Cairo from the brutal monotony you might associate with desert climates is the Nile corridor and the Mediterranean influence creeping down from the north. These keep humidity at a moderate 70% year-round. That is higher than you'd expect for a city surrounded by open desert. The year divides fairly cleanly into two periods. From roughly November through March, Cairo settles into its cool, dry season. Daytime temperatures sit in the 18°C to 24°C (66°F to 75°F) range. Nights can drop toward 10°C (50°F). The occasional brief shower arrives, and locals treat it as a minor curiosity. The rest of the year belongs to the heat. It builds through spring, peaks in July when afternoon highs hit 35°C (95°F), then retreats gradually through autumn. Rainfall from May through October is essentially zero. Spring deserves its own mention. It comes with a specific complication: the khamsin. These hot, dust-laden winds blow in from the Sahara between March and May. On a difficult day they reduce visibility, coat everything in fine sand, and push temperatures several degrees above the seasonal average within hours. They're unpredictable in timing and intensity. Some springs in Cairo you barely notice them. Others you spend a morning indoors. Either way, understand them before you build an outdoor itinerary around those months.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Cultural
November through February is the window most travelers aim for. Cairo's Pyramids and Egyptian Museum are manageable at 18°C to 23°C (66°F to 74°F). The city's street life takes on a particular energy during the cooler months. December and January are the busiest. Accommodation fills early.
Adventure
October and early November offer a decent balance. The heat has retreated to manageable levels. The crowds haven't fully assembled. The lower-angle light that season gives the monuments a quality midday visits don't capture.
Budget
June through August offers the most flexibility. The heat keeps international visitor numbers low. Accommodation rates tend to ease. Cairo continues at its own pace regardless. Outdoor sightseeing needs to to happen in the early morning or evening. The trade-off suits travelers who'd rather negotiate their own terms with the city.
Beach
Cairo sits inland. The nearest Mediterranean and Red Sea options require travel. That said, April and October are reasonable months to combine time in the city with a coastal extension. You land in neither the sharp summer heat nor the peak-season crowds of winter.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Cairo.

Year-Round Essentials
high-SPF sunscreen
the sun reflects off desert surfaces with intensity even in winter
reusable water bottle
non-negotiable; you'll refill constantly
lip balm
most visitors underestimate how quickly the air affects skin
lightweight scarf or shawl
sun protection outdoors, required coverage at mosques and certain sites, and a layer against the aggressive air conditioning common in hotels and museums
comfortable closed-toe walking shoes
make more sense than sandals at archaeological sites where the ground is uneven and often sharp
portable phone charger
handles long sightseeing days when outlets are hard to find
cool months (November through March)
Clothing
warm layer, fleece or light jacket, sweater
Layering Tip
at least one warm layer is worth packing for evenings. Mornings start cold enough that a sweater is welcome even on days that warm up significantly by noon
summer (June through September)
Clothing
natural fiber clothing in light colors
Layering Tip
linen and cotton breathe in ways that synthetic fabrics simply don't in that heat
spring (March through May)
Accessories
lightweight buff or dust mask
Layering Tip
worth the small amount of bag space for the possibility of a khamsin event. Even a minimal barrier offers real relief during a sand-wind episode
Plug Type
Type C (two round pins) and Type F
Voltage
220 volts and 50Hz
Adapter Note
North American travelers need both a plug adapter and a voltage converter for 110V appliances. Most modern electronics handle 220V automatically, so check your devices before packing a converter.
